Plastic Bottle Ranch

I want to talk about being a responsible consumer this week and to answer a couple frequent questions I receive from many of you wonderful subscribers.

First question I am asked quite often is: Where did I put those million bottles we saved? Well, they are living free and happy on a plastic bottle ranch. Just kidding. Actually, when I talk about how many plastic bottles that you and I have saved from landfills, I am referring to the amount of bottles we did not have to use by using concentrated products.

You must keep in mind that although recycling is better than dumping, (usually), it still takes energy to recycle that material. So it is better not to use it at all if possible. Unfortunatly at this time, recycled materials cost more than virgin materials in most cases. This is true in the case of plastic bottles. Since they cost more, the average American will not use them. So what can we do? Read on:

EXAMPLE OF FREE ENTERPRISE SAVING OUR ENVIROMENT: Much of the plastic that is recycled is being turned into carpeting and clothing very inexpensively, and this is because someone found a demand and has used good old American free enterprise to make a profit with it. Because enough people want to buy this quality carpeting, it is sold at competitive prices. (By the way, I realize our friends in the UK, Australia, and many other countries have expertise at free enterprise also).

Most people that buy this clothing and carpeting do not even know they are being "enviromentally conservative." They are receiving a quality product that they want or need at a good price. And because of this millions and millions of recycled plastic bottles are being put on the floors of nice homes and worn on the bodies of all social structures instead of thrown into the landfills. Pretty tricky huh?

But you must keep in mind that although the motive behind this capitalism may have been to preserve, more than likely it was to make a profit. Is that wrong? I don't think so. If the companies do not make a profit, they cannot continue with this activity.

Now I know that many of you have and do purchase products that are enviromentally beneficial, and pay a premium price for it, although you may be sacrificing quality. This is very honorable of you, but do you think that most Americans will do this? No they will not. And do you deserve this kind of treatment? NO!

It is our mission then, to educate everyone we have contacts with of the benefits to capatilize on preserving our Earth. May I point out, that our friends in Germany, who many are subscribers to this letter, have taken the ability to conserve and preserve light years ahead of us Americans. We could learn a lot from them. But my point is, if we are to induce the GENERAL POPULATION, not just us crazy people, to conserve and preserve, we have to show it to be in their best interest. And I mean their best interest as far as quality, desirablity, and price to the consumer, and profit to the marketer.

How can you do this? Next time you are shopping for carpeting or clothing ask for products made from plastic bottles. You may be surprised at how much is available. Then, ONLY purchase the product if it is the quality you are looking for, the style you are looking for, and the price you are looking for. Do not be taken advantage of because of your soft spot for conserving.

When you do this you are helping to push ahead the American motive of the marketers to sell these products. If enough people demand these products, more people will sell them!! Tricky huh?

DO NOT LET EARTH FRIENDLY MARKETERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU. Which leads me to another point. I hear unscrupulous, yes I do mean unscrupulous, marketers of Earth friendly products telling you that if enough people buy their products, eventually the price will go down. While this is true in logic, it will never happen!

Why? We are the only ones that will follow that philosophy, and since at this point we are a minority, there will never be enough demand for the prices to go down. Do not let this philsophy take advantage of your kind heart! Demand from the persons selling you Earth friendly products that they have a duty to compete on quality, style, desirablity, and price with the non-Earth friendly products. This will push these marketers to develop this strategy, which in turn will make the products attractive to all NON-Earth conservative persons, causing them to purchase Earth friendly products. With this stategy we influence the majority population of NON-Earth friendly persons to conserve and preserve. Pretty tricky, huh?

SHORT STORY TIME, SIT ON THE FLOOR IN A CIRCLE. Yes, you can make a difference with these simple points. Let us take an example. Merv Conserve, a likable fellow, has been purchasing enviromentally correct laundry detergent for many years. Merv pays a lot more for this product, because he feels that it is worth it in order to help save our enviroment. And the nice distributor he purchases from seems to want to help the enviroment also. Now Merv washes a lot of clothes, for you see he and his wife, Connie Conserve, have 6 children.

One day Connie Conserve loses her home computer that she uses for her work to a power surge. Since the home insurance policy will not cover power surges, Connie is out of work. This leaves Merv Conserve, a forest ranger, as the only income for the family.

On Saturday Connie and Merv are doing laundry, and lo and behold, their distributor for laundry detergent rings the door bell. Looking at the bottle of detergent, Merv notices they are almost out.

Inviting their friendly distributor in for coffee, Merv and Connie explain the pinch they are in financially. They feel good about using the enviromentally correct detergent, but since it costs them almost 75 cents per load, they just cannot afford it. The friendly distributor explains how Merv and Connie are making a better world for their children by using his laundry detergent, but to no avail. Merv and Connie have $20.00 left for laundry detergent, and they have to stretch it as far as possible. They plan to purchase detergent from the grocery story that will only cost them about 30 cents per load.

Have Merv and Connie turned evil? Of course not. They are being faced with reality. They need to make the $20.00 last twice as long as before Connie lost her computer. If they do not, they will run out of detergent.

Now the friendly enviromentally correct distributor has a problem. He just lost a couple of good customers. And he needs to sell these products to feed his family. Hanging his head low, he drives his electric car back to his family's dome home to find his wife picking carrots from their organic garden. "What' s wrong honey?" asks Ms. enviromentally correct distributor,

Mr: "I lost the Conserve account. They said my products are too expensive." Ms: "Well, I must agree with them. If we had to pay full price instead of your distributor price, we could not afford to use it either." Mr: "Well if that is the case, then there are probably a lot of people who cannot afford this."

That night, the distributor surfed the net searching for other products available that would meet the standards of quality and Earth friendliness he insisted upon, but would be competitive in price. He found a company that was providing what he was looking for.

The next day the distributor knocks on Merv and Connie's door. Telling them that he found a product that would not only be Earth friendly and good quality, but would actually be less expensive per wash load than the store brands.

Well Merv and Connie were excited. They always felt better purchasing products that were Earth friendly, and now they did not have to sacrifice to do it. They were so excited about it as a matter of fact, that they mentioned to their friends how they were saving money over the store products. This brought more customers to the distributor, and they were NON-Earth friendly people. Eventually, the distributor had many, many more customers helping to preserve the Earth, all because Merv and Connie could not afford the high price anymore.

Now what do you suppose would have happened if Merv and Connie had demanded a competitive price from their distributor earlier? What would happen if you demand it?

Demand that your products be Earth friendly, good quality, and price competitive. You are not helping just yourself, but you are helping all of the Earth friendly industry to become more attractive to the majority of America, the NON-Earth friendly people.

I feel this is the example that needs to be set to the Earth friendly world. Why can't we be competitive on all levels?
